Student Testimonials at Orientation
I think current student (or recent graduate) testimonials at orientation are so helpful! We have been inviting students to attend orietnation for some time now and I think it definitely helps the new students to feel more excited about the program and being able to visualize success in their own career.
In addition, this also helps create a bond with the graduating students and we've had success with alumni paying it forward. Some of them end up in positions where they return to us as employers looking to hire our current students.
So it really comes full circle.
I also thought the part on including activities at orientation would be beneficial, especially with evening orientation/classes. Sometimes the night orientations can get mellow and dull. Keeping things lively and entertaining would definitely help boost interest and excitement.
The inclusion of successful graduates who have overcome obstacles to enhance their career, thus lives, at your institution are the best speakers. The students can relate to the challenges the grads have faced and think, "If he/she can do it, so can I."
Sometimes when an administrator talks with a new or future student it doesn't resonate as well as hearing it from someone in their age group who has lived through the education. The believability is far greater. Current students or recent graduates adds a climate of credence to any point.
I also like to bring students in to speak to the new students. They seem to connect and are excited to speak to someone who is almost done. The new students also pick up good information about time management and ways to improve their success.
