Orientation=first impression
Orientation is all about impression. Moreover, a first impression. When a student comes to orientation they are expecting to get connected not only to others in the institution (like instructors and other students), but are looking to get connected to the resources that will help them suceed in their journey. They are ultimately looking to have their expectations (set out by the admissions counselor) met and are there to make sure that they are in line with the descision they made to attend.
In addition to the "happy happy" party pushed to get the students excited, rules and regs and institutional expectations of/for/from the student have to be reviewed. Students, as consumers, need to know upfront what's expected. This is not just a "buyer beware" mind set, but actual, true informed consent.
First impressions are very important, everyone having a chance to get to know each other and breaking the ice
Exactly, and it is a first impression and with some students you do not get the chance to make a second impressiion.
I agree at our orientation when they walk in we play the graduation theme song just to give them a feel of accomplishment.
