We do the same thing. Often we will have a q & a session with current students to put newer students at ease
In the first week of class we have the students fill out a new contact sheet. Many students relocate to go to our school and their contact information will be different than the information given at enrollment in their home town. We also encourage students to trade contact information so they will have someone to call should they need a ride, or simply to develop new friendships

This is a great point. Students enroll in school for a variety of reasons. The outcome is always because they want a different type of life. Some know exactly what they want and others just know this is a necessity. Finding out where they are and helping them have a clear direction is important.

Well, one obvious piece of information is why the student has enrolled in the training program. If the student has enrolled to enter a specific industry, this should be the focus of the instructor for confirming their committment. If a student enrolls because they know the have to attend a school because this is their only way to secure employment, then the instructor will need to help the individual in planning a career path. This type of interaction will be positive for the student and hopefully keep him or her in school.
keeping everyone current on a students success is vital to all.it cannot be left to one group or set of persons.this reassures the student and keeps retension up and a more complete student experience.
i tell them how much they could help the students

This is great and I am sure gets them 'in the mode' for coming prepared. No one likes to feel like they don't know what they are doing, and it sounds like you address a lot of that in your orientation. Great job!
Susan
We have the students come to orientation with the expectation of being prepared for class. They have an outline for the proper supplies, dress code, IDs, parking passes and they need these items before they get their schedules.
Where they are from; location, prior education and work experiences.

And those are important and student services should typically serve as the 'hub' for potential barriers. Some schools in this forum have a weekly/monthly meeting with student services and faculty to identify any particular issues. Does your institution do something like this?
Susan
Any information about the student could be useful to faculty. Especially, information concerning fears or challenges that the student faces. The more information that a teacher has about a student the easier it will be for the teacher to find a connection point with the student and to begin building a relationship quickly.
Unfortunately, the Admissions Dept. does not share much personal student information with the faculty. Unless, of course, the student self identifies him/herself as having a learning disability, or transportation issues, etc. Then the admissions rep will share this info with the proper department - Student Services, etc.
Our faculity meet the new students during thier orientation to give them an overview of the classroom and the expectations.
We also offer student clubs to help the students become part of the culture.

The personal conversation accomplished in your intermingling I'm sure go a long way to making students feel at home. Great job.
Susan
We help admin by constantly updating the students contact info.During the orientation we intermingle with the students and get to know them on a more personal level.
our orientation has several components. we have chefs/faculty at each orientation to answer questions and talk with the students.
Items such as where they are from, if they have previous work experience, what they want to get out of the program, their career goals, transportation issues are a few things that come to mind.
students' background diversity.
