Welcome packets
I like the idea of welcome packets. We give so much verbal info and the students don't seem to remember. The syllabus is helpful but other tips for doing well in class could be useful
The welcome package for instructors are the course outline and grading. Instructors should always welcome every new class, but the primary campus welcome should be accomplish by the admissions department. Class room welcome should included instructors back ground.

That's a great idea. Do the student guides stay with them the whole time, first session or ?

Our establishment has a student guide for the students. It makes for a great source when referrance is needed.

This is excellent. They have something that is both personalized and all the helpful things in writing that they can take with them.

We always give out a packet at orientation that includes their class schedule, policies, map of the area, emergency information, info such as career placement, staff list, emergency phone numbers, severe weather info, etc... I think it definitely helps to have something in writing. We also try to do a fun activity thats interactive.

It certainly sounds like your orientations are FUN! Getting people to relax and enjoy themselves breaks down barriers. I would bet your students leave feeling like they will fit in and are excited about attending class. Kudos!

I like the idea of individulized packets. Our students do have alot of the same needs and fears. These packets can help them see this. Helping students feel like they are not the only ones with issues is very helpful. I do an ice breaker at each orientation full of silly questions such as "Who here has a brother and a sister?" or "Who here seem an elephant?" After each questions the students and staff who answer yes stand up and high-five each other. I always end with "Who here is going to be a graduate?" and the entire group claps and high-fives each other. I tell them to notice how alike they really are. They may think they are the only ones with issues, but in reality they are alike in many ways.

I agree...and if the packets are individualized (which of course takes more time--but in the end makes a bigger impression) it is even more helpful. Each student has unique needs. As much as we can, we should try and meet those.
The upside is that many have the same needs...they just don't have them all. Providing opporutnities for students to connect with others who also share those same struggles helps everyone complete.

Great idea to have this resource to assist in information overload and retention. This serves as a valuable resource.
