helping them
Help them out.
Agreed...I know in the course of my education I learned bunches, but what has continued to serve me throughout my professional life is the support network that I developed among peers and faculty. We can always reference a book for a refresher of information, but the human connections we make and nurture are as vital as the education its self. Learning that there is support out there is a wonderful learning to share with folks as they enter a new level of their lives.
James--
What you describe is mentoring at its best! This is a significant part of what we can accomplish...helping individuals transform their lives.

helping students in any way that you can , from a simple check engine light on thier car to a problem at work with a car that they do not know how to fix, to a every day discussion about life. Using your life experence so they can understand what a good thing helping sombody else out can do for your life to make it better.
Being a support for the students is key, whether it is tutoring them or just being a set of ears for them. I was a student alone in the area and went through some tough times while attending school and it was nice to have an instructor that understood.
