Out of this particular module of this course, I must say the best idea I can use to incorporate into my own orientations would be the welcome letter from the Instructor!
This is such an excellent opportunity to personalize a greeting, and to reenforce my own verbal greeting at orientation. It shows that I care about my students, and gives an example of how well prepared I will be for future classroom time.
Not to mention, I only have to write it once, and save it for future classes, reprint it, and sign it personally.
I plan to write one today and impliment it into my next orientation!
So I ask my students that the end of each term to write a letter to the next class of information that they feel will help them out, things that they wish they had been told before they started the class. I then use quotes form these letters as I write a letter to the next class. The new students really seem to like this, it is coming from other students and not just me.
I agree I found it to be a real ice breaker for your students. Letting them know how to communicate with you and also helping them feel welcomed and that there success is important to you and your not running them threw the school just to keep your classes full.
This will help students to feel at ease with their Instructor are leading The way but not to high that they can not approach them, and are geniunely interest in their education, and this puts them at ease.
