Faculty Involvement
Faculty should talk about themselves to seem real
I agree - whenever I am meeting with a student who is struggling academically I ask them if they have spoken with their instructor about their difficulties, and 9 times out of 10 they have not done so. Intimidation is a big factor, so anything that can be done to humanize instructors will help students feel more comfortable approching faculty.
Faculty must seem approachable, even if they are not teaching the students in the next class. students need to feel comfortable with staff to increase student retention in school
Yes, be real, approachable, kind, compassionate and interested in your students. A sincere approach is always detected and students understand if you’re truly all of these things. Sharing real life stories good or bad, gives students a true picture of relative topics and concerns within the field of study.
The student has cross the bridge and is now a member of your Institution's Student Body. They are left with other students and their faculty to guide them through the maze which is higher education. Faculty as well as staff members must be available to the students to answer those pressing questions. No question is out of bounds. Educational and well as life experiences are important to the student and should be answered with the same zest as class related topics.
Students need to know that their instructor is approachable. They have to seem REAL to their students. This allows the students to be able to relate and if they can relate they will learn better and feel more confident about their ability to complete their courses and be successful in the chosen field.
