Classroom Expecations

At the beginning of each mod as I cover my syllabus, I also go over my expectations for the students in the classroom. I discuss topics such as phone use, breaks, classroom discussions, asking and answering questions, eating, tardiness, plagiarism, email and phone communications and other items that may be distracting or inappropriate behavior. In discussing, these matters I found that some students have many questions on appropriate behavior and are not sure of themselves as it is the first time in a formal educational setting. And when they see others have questions, they realize they are not alone in their fears. I end up with a great classroom dynamic of support and respect for others. These positive behaviors sometimes correspond to their workplace success more than the technical skills I teach them.

Great way to set expectations. If student know what is expected from them and what to expected from the instructor it makes for a great class. Once the policies are set and inforced it makes the learning experience better for all involved.

I think if students know what the expectations of class will be it makes for a much better learning enviorment. It is like a road map to success in the course and their experience in school.

I also beleive for this to work well each instructor and staff must always be on the same page so the students are not getting different answers from different people.

I love this approach.. I will borrow from this going forward..

Yes. This is very true. The boundaries have to be establ;ished from the beginning so that there are not any expectations that are unknown causing conflicts later in the term.

I agree, most times even as adult learners we like to play the role of "O I didnt know we couldnt do that", when we know in actuality we should not engage in such behaviors

I agree, you must outline the rules for the class. If you dont, the student may not be sure of what is expected of them.

Lauren,

Amen! Knowing how to interact, problem-solve and communicate effective in groups are skills that goes a long way in the work place.

I have also found out that you need to cover all of the rules the first day. Once the student knows what to expect, the relax and we have a better teaching environment.
