Attendance
It is important to the success of the strudents to to be aware of the importance of attendace not only while in school but also on the job. It is a tough market today with many apllicants wanting their job.
I agree , It is very important to not only have good attendance but to be on time .
You are correct, when you show up at school and work on time it shows you have the will to learn and also do a good job.
I tell my students, punctuality is more important than a 4.0 grade average.
I preferred to hire technicians who were on time.
If the starting time was 8.00AM they had better be there before 8:00AM.
If they were working flat rate and came late too many times their new start time was 9:00AM If that
didn't work the new start time was 10:00AM.
One month of that and they were back on track.
When it hits their wallet they take note.
Eric--
Wow! That's quite a story and an example. You are right, a 'sniffle' does count. I am assuming, however, that you didn't put yourself in any long-term danger by returning so quickly.
Susan
I was recently in a near fatal car accident which occurred on a weekend. I was not allowed to teach the first shift on Monday by my wife (and doctors), but I showed up for the evening shift with two black eyes and a head injury. Seven months later, I had head(skull) surgery on a Friday to repair damage, and showed up for work the next week. When the students asked me why I was at work and not at home, I simply stated that I had a job to do and it was more important for me to be there for them than for my own recovery. I hope the students shared this with other classmates so that they all would understand how important it is to show up every day and on time. Having a "sniffle" is no excuse for taking a sick day or missing class just because you don't feel like working that day. Life still goes on!
Couldn't agree more. We prepare our students for a trade were they will be paid based on their productivity. I constantly stress to them the importance of getting to school and work on time and how sliding in the door at 8:01 when you are due in at 8:00 does make a big difference not only in your professionalism but in your productivity.
I keep reinforcing the fact that atendance is very important to education and also to prospective employers.
If your missing time in school your not getting all the information you need to be sucessful.
In my experience, first question employers ask of grads is "what was your attendance rate in school?"
Tony--
Very well said. Moving from the academic to 'real' world has some rude awakenings. Good for you for making that connection.
Susan
David--
Great question. Another one is what they would have learned if they did stay home...some of the daytime shows only have so much variety :)
Susan
I agree. The focus of the vast majority of todays' students is the grade. I explain to them that in all my years of being in the everyday work place, I never got a 4.0 on a task I was expected to do. Nor did I get an "A", nor a gold star, nor a "100". They must come to realize that coming to "work" on time is expected. And if they are unable to get to class on time, and their attendence is recored on their transcript, employeers will see that they had not been serious about class. So why hire them?
I tottaly agree. I stress attendance everyday. I ask them what they would have missed today if they would have stayed at home. That really gets them thinking.
Attendance is huge in the real life! I try to stress to my students the respect leavel that comes along with being on time if not early as well as the over perception of your overall work ethics
Nelis--
As you state, it's very important to keep the students focused on the expectations in the work place. Good for you!
Susan
I EXPLAIN TO MY STUDENTS THAT AN EMPLOYEE WHO SHOW'S UP FOR WORK AND HAS A GOOD ATTITUDE AND OPEN MIND WILL BECAME BETTER AND BETTER AND MORE SUCCESSFULL
Students need to understand the urgency of attendance.
It's all about employer expectations. Attention to attendance habits should not be viewed as punitive, but rather an attempt by all to let students know that regular attendace will be a base line expectation for securing and keeping a good job.
Mark--
That is so true...and while some students will argue they will show up to work even though they are more lax with school, it really is a matter of developing dependability. Obviously, there is also a strong correlation between attending class and the grade they receive.
Susan
Dan,
I agree that it is important to stress to students that if they don't show up regularly and on time for work they will find they may not be needed when it comes time to reduce the work force in tough times.
I tell my students that attendance is one of the most important things employeers look at. If you don't show up to class the employeers would think why would they show up to work?
