First Day

Every first day of our 3 week rotations we review all of the rules and guidelines for the class. if a student misses first day they miss alot of information. So i try to get the missing guy up to speed when they finally show up.

At the end of every rotation I also remind the class of the importance of attending the first day of the course the following rotation. They may only have that day to get any active demonstrations and be able to question procedure or potential problems.

Scarey how quickly these impressions are formed.

I took a college coure pertaining to first impressions. According to their research, an instructor establishes their first impression with first 6 seconds of the class.

The instructor's appearance, classroom organization and the initial greet play significant roles in determining the student's impression.

There is not impression as impacting as a first impression.

Excellent! The more we can acclimate them to the 'real world', the better. If we don't show up to work, likely we will get a call!

Good practice, somtimes I will ask if anyone knows the student missing and have them call them to see what may be the delay .This mentaly prepaires the student for when she/he attends class as well gives me a little heads up of how to aproach the student .

I agree. Unfortunately far too many students view the first day as a waste of time and miss out on the important information. This puts them behind from the start and many find it difficult to get back up to speed.

I go through a short S.O.P.for an overview of the class on what is expected of rhem during their time in class, also I get their in-put on what thry expect out of the class. Then we go to lab to help get the students excited about what they are going to learn about.

This can be quite challenging with some students, as it's hard to cover everything in such a small time.
