The Buddy System?

Hello, One of the topics mentioned is to pair up new students (late enrollees) with current students. I was wondering if anyone does this and how sucessful they feel it is.

We have current students come to orientation and meet new students then, but they are not paired up on a buddy system.

Thanks for your feedback!

I agree with the buddy system. I have found this to work with students who are having difficulty as well.

Erica,

Peer contact can be highly effective but the model also has to be very defined and monitored. Sometimes it can go very 'wrong' quickly if the mentors become disgruntled.

I had not thought of this idea, but I love it. Peer contact can be so much or just as effective.

Juliana,

That's not been my experience, although anything is possible. It does, however, given them a great start.

I see how there could be some great benefits to this system. Such as the sense of belonging and peer bonding with that particular individual.

But my only concern is this, does it create a "Us Vs. Them" mentality with each pair concerning the rest of the class with whom they have not had a chance to interact?

I have found this very helpful for both the 'late' enrollee and the 'current' student, it gives the current student a feeling of importance and helps the 'New' arrival feel more comfortable knowing that the other students care and show interest in them.

Dayna,

I completely agree! This is a great way to help both levels of students increase the understanding of the material and to develop support systems.

Buddy system works very well. I like to pair a strong student with one not so strong. It helps the strong student because they are teaching which means they are getting a higher understanding while bringing up their classmate to help them pass. It builds friendship, raises self esteem, and raises the understanding of class material.

I actually use this approach for every student. Late enrollment or not, I think it is helpful to feel a sense of responsibility for self and others. It is my experience that it is a deeper investment for the student, and that is always beneficial.
It also secures the feeling of belonging in the group. There is an immediate peer bonding with someone in the class.
