Student engagement

How do we identify all the students who are posing a risk? I feel like sometimes there is a disconnect between admissions and education. I had one student tell me that he only picked his program b/c the admissions rep told him he would get bored in another program. It's essential to have a strong working relationship with admissions.

It is important to make the student fell welcome and part of the family to prevent drops.

I agree totally. I always have open communication with my students. I always make sure they know they can come talk to me at any time they need assistance or just need someone to listen to them.

Open communication is a must and with having open communication you are aware of the possible risk factors that may influence student retention.

I agree you definitely have to enroll students who want to be in a structured environment. Those who come and dont want to be there cause administration to work extra hard.

It is important to have group and individual conversations with students. Identify students who may be at risk and have meaningful conversation and listen to their feedback

Rachel,

Well, ideally there is some sort of assessment (academically) and opportunity for some career exploration (tests or conversations with faculty?) Having done admissions myself, I know that many students come in with no idea what they want to do professionally, but know they need to go to college.
