The 3MS
I was really enlightened with mentoring. I was able to look it at from another view. I learned the importance of how it is critical to model, mentor and monitor the students. As an instructor, we should always lead by example.
I not only liked the 3MS but the acronym for Mentor which is motivate, encourage, nurture, teach and train, open eyes to possibilities and reward good work with praise. This encompasses a great deal of what we need to keep in mind while interacting with our students. Being able to model success and tie it all together with monitoring makes a great deal of sense.
I totally agree with you. We cannot outline boundaries for the students and then not hold them accountable. We MUST lead by example.
We model what the student should be as an instructor
Mentor the students to motivate them
Monitor if we do this we can keep down retention
I agree that it is important to lead by example when mentoring. I always let my students know how it was when I was in school to help them understand that I know what they are going through. And that I am here to help them if they need me for anything. I also think it is critical to be a role model to the students also and have them look up to you. Wanting their trust is important also. Make them aware that I am there to help them, and explain that when I was in school I struggled and needed help in certain classes.
It is very important when relating to the students that they perceive you as a role model
Someone with experience as well as the skills needed to succeed in whatever field he or she is instructing. A mentor someone willing to share the skills and experiences and lasty their awareness that you are watching to see that they suceed as well
