Attention I Must Mention:)
I always make sure that when giving attention to the class it is focused on the entire class. It may be a little unwise to give attention to only specific students. I do give individual attention to those students who have learning disabilities but, otherwise it's the entire class I give attention to.
Erick,
"Attention leads to retention." It is great to hear about campus presidents who know and interact with their students. This is not always the case.

Wonderfully put. Saw this work first hand. I review attendance for my school as the campus president as often as I can. Somehow I remembered a students name who had missed two days in a row. I saw her in the FA office the following day and asked her if everything was allright. She was starteled... She was suprized I knew her name and further had known she had been missing from class. She confirmed to me some troubles at home and I helped show her how important school attendance was and how ultimately it would help her out of her monitary issues. To this day she smiles at my presence and has been in class.
People inherently focus on themselves...when you focus on them, they connect with you. Gives them pride and purpose.
Thanks for sharing this, Roberta. We have found that our culinary faculty members are popular because they do the same types of things. Are there some ways you can give the same attention in a classroom situation?

The great thing about being a Chef Instructor is the ability to walk around and visit with each student as he or she is working on their culinary or pastry assignment for the day. This is a great vehicle to give one on one attention to anyone having a tough time with any assignment or needs to have some support in dealing with other issues. It is a wonderful way to get to know the students and the challenges that they are facing.
Dionne,
There are ways to give individual attention to students even when there is a big class. Asking direct questions to individual students is a simple one.
