They need to believe that they can succeed. I try to instill a sense of "I can do this" in all my students. Often I will use an example from my own past to illustrate. I try to let them all know that I care and they can come to me for help.

Mentors must BE what they want their students to BE so that students will BECOME what their mentors want them to BECOME...successful.
Or "say what you do...do what you say" You are so right! Students know if you really care and they will test you!

Mean what you say and say what you mean. Do not back down from a challege, and be as sincere as possible, students can smell fake.
