monitoring

At my insitution we resently began doing weekly meetings between Student services, Faculty and Tutors to review each students progress from each ares percpective. It has allowed us to have a more meaningful conversation with the students. It was interesting to hear the perseption each department had about specific students. Without that cross talk there was a conciderable amount of information that would have gone unused.

Progress monitoring can give you and your students teacher information that can help your them to learn more and learn faster, and help you make better decisions about the type of instruction that will work best with your students.

Laura,

Sometimes mid-courseis too late to help a struggling student unless it is a very short term. What are some of the things you look for to identiy a student who can benefit from your advising?

This is one of the new things I will do is have mid course one on one talks with the students. Before that I go around to each student daily to see how they are doing with the subjects covered for the week. This pro active meeting I am hoping will prevent negativity at the end of the course when it is too late to address it.

That's a really good idea. It makes for a good sounding board for ways to better assist students.

Marshall,

This is a really good approach.
