Model, Mentor, Monitor
Model, Mentor, and Monitor are the three steps to student success. Take time out of your day and get to know your students because attention equals retention!
I have been taking just a little bit of extra time to get to know the students and to pay attention to the "little things" in their lives.this places me closer to getting to know them and they have a closer bond with me as instructor - thus we can move forward and get down to serious teaching.
This is so true. We must be a positive role model for our students. It really does play an important part in getting through to them. Mentor of course. Monitor is important as well. This is our view into how well they are learning and it is the feedbck we need to make any corrections. Corrections in both our approach and of course corrections in their work.
Sheila,
Thanks. Do yoy send students assignments and lecture notes while they are out to help them stay caught up?

Sheila,
The little things make a huge difference when they are cummulative.

When I know that a student has been missing from class due to a family member being ill, I always make it a point of acknowledging the student when he/she arrives back to class, and ask about how the family member is doing.
I agree. It's the little things that we do for our students that go a long way, for example standing at your doorway greeting each student, and saying a few kind words as they walk into the classroom.
I try to relate things that I have done in both my work and personal experiences to the students so that they can see in many cases I have been where they are. Then hopefully they can see that through the focus and dedication they can achieve their goals.
Mohammed,
What are the HABEs that are the most important for a teacher to model?
Jeffrey Schillinger
I do my best to be an example or model for my students, sometimes i put this in a way to share some personal story with my students.
I always try to spend more extra time with my students so i can find out some ways to help them
to acomplesh their goals.
Nicole ,
We need to be friendly without trying to be a friend. This usually keeps us from crossing the line you reference.
Jeffrey Schillinger
Students do enjoy when you yalk to them. They need to know that someone cares. We acn be understanding and listen without going over the Teacher, student line. Someone cared for us.
Dee,
It sounds like you are focused on the right things.

I always try to learn my new students names and faces as quickly as I can. Learning names only isn't as effective as trying to associate it with their face. I'm a bit older than most and tend to have some difficulty with that. It's a challenge that I welcome and strive to succeed at each quarter when classes change.
I work at a small campus and tend to run into students frequently going between buildings. The nice weather brings them outdoors. I always try to greet them by name and ask about things I've heard from them about their lives. Some don't share much even though I feel I'm open to sharing parts of my life as it relates to teaching and the career field we're all in or pursuing as well as asking them open-ended questions about issues in their life related to school or personal struggles.
