Good point. It is sometimes difficult for us to relate to students as we get older. Asking questions and doing a lot of listening is a big help.

I have mentor students and student athletics; having a connection with your students can bring the best out of them when you find out what really makes them get out of bed each and everyday trying their hardness to be successful. I tried to lead by example; however the challenge for me is that I am looking at things from my generation and teaching students from other generation can make your day rich in learning especially when you see things the same way as you.

I agree,I love mentoring the students that gives me an avenue to give examples of day to day experiences and case studies with what would you do in that situation to the students.

Teaching accountability is a true "value added" proposition. What are some specific ways you help students to develop accountability?

I take my position as an instructor with great appreciation of the student body. Making sure that students understand I am here for them as well as making them accountable for their lives.
I take interest in the students welfare and provide feedback to them on a regular basis about how they are doing in the class, letting them know how they are progressing.

Mentor choices often are based on personality and not on overt behaviors. What about the way you interact with your students positions you as a mentor?

I mentor the students by acting professionall in clinic while I am reviewing Health Histories in front of their patients. I find role playing is very helpful.

I teach dental hygiene courses so I try to mentor and show by example. We do not allow the students to wear jewelry in the clinic so I make sure I take all of mine off in the clinic. I make sure I to wear all of the same PPE that they wear and sit in the same positions they need to set in. When I give them feedback I try to lead with positive feedback and give them the negative feedback in a positive manner.

Yes, I agree. If you mentor while teach you will encourage your students and I believe they will change and develop goals for their courses and hopefully for their future.
