I teach registered nursing. Research has shown that it is difficult to master nursing school without being in a study group. I assign my students to groups, keep attend., and follow up with a phone call when students are absent from their sessions.
in my school we have perfect attendance pins at graduation. we also keep strick record of attendace and base that on professionalism criteria. we talk to student that are having attendace trouble and find out if we can assist in any way
We make direct contact with any student that is absent from class and find out the reason why. We discuss the reasons why and work to establish a solution if there is a long term issue.
All good strategies, Lee. These are common but effective things that career colleges do.

Publicly recognize the behaviors we value: *Perfect Attendance,
*Dean's and President's Lists for academic performance.
*Contact them when they miss a class
*Send administrators into the classroom to connect with the students on a more personal level...
I really like the idea of assigning an administrator 5 students to seek out once a week for each of the weeks in the term and will get that in place.
We recognize perfect weekly attendance on a monitor in the hallway. Instructors also call absent students to find out what's going on.
wE HIGHLIGHT OUR INSTUCTORS AS A TO THERE MERITS FROM THE STUDENTS . THEN WE ALWAYS TAKE OUR TIME WITH EACH STUDENTS NEEDS AND ONLY AFTER WE HAVE HELPED EACH STUDENT THEN WE CAN FORM A CLASS AND SHOW OTHERS HOW MUCH THEY HAVE MOVED UPWARD
Victoria,
Thanks for this post. Please let us know more about the pins.

Tyler,
This is a pretty common, and important, strategy at most career colleges. What are some ways you show that you are paying attention while students are on campus?
Jeffrey Schillinger
When a student is absent from class we make one on one contact to find out why they missed, is everything ok, is there an issue we could help them with so they can attend class. We also hand out pins to help students feel a sense of belonging
Getting to know each student individually is important to rentention. sometimes a student just knowing someone cares and is there to listen is all they need to continue on.
We call our students when they are not present, to make sure they are ok and to let them know we care about them and their success at school.
It really starts with the initial contact through our admissions reps. Each rep tours the potential student through the campus and introduces the student to each department. The department leaders have a chance to let the student know that they are available to them at any time. The instructors also get a chance to interact with the student and find out what is their motivation and purpose is to successfully complete the program. We call them when they are not in class and post all classwork and projects on a student portal so they can catch up if out for a few days or more. Everyone makes an effort to greet each student in the hallways and find out what is going on in their classes and personal life, some who struggle may have simply lost their personal motivation. A quick story and or directional support can change a student’s attitude and put them back on their path of success
Eric,
Thanks for this post. You captured the importance of the instructor very well.

Hi Mr. Schillinger
All the school provide services to student to keep them in school but the best retention service is from faculty.
Attention=Retention, faculty have the most important role in retention, and always there is a possibility of improvement, faculty need to understand the students need and what they want, retention start first with our attitude we need to show our motivation and dedication of what we want to teach, paying attention to each student, keep them motivate and proud of what there are going to learn, there is nothing more important when student tell the teacher I am learning a lot and I am happy to be in your class. This is for me my way to do my retention, I know student come to school for the service of the faculty, they want to learn.

Letitia,
Thanks for sharing this. It sounds like you are really paying attention.

Because I teach primarily online, from what I know, they call the students regularily when they see no participation, they also follow up on students in coding classes to see if they need tutoring and encourage them to get tutoring. As the instuctor, I do the following:
1. I send positive messages to all the students in the form of announcements once a week. It's great because some of the students will e-mail me and thank me for some of the "positive passages."
2. If a students grade for the week is below 70%, I send a reach out e-mail asking if they need any additional assistance on understanding the lesson or if they
re having trouble with taking tests.
3. In the discussion forums, I make up my own questions in addition to the one that the school provides, but my questions require the student to look at themselves before answering the question.
Thanks,
Letitia
This is the same practice that is performed at the school. The student response so positively and acknowledgement is a great tool
Our school participates by in retention by calling the students on a daily basis if they are absent. If they are absent more that two days they ae put under a "radar" so to speak. They are offered tutoring to catch up on any missed material
We follow-up on anyone who misses class. We have awards for perfect attendance. We monitor with daily attendance and advisement forms. Everyone meets and greets students daily. There is counseling mid-term with remediation if grades are starting to fall. Our school really does go above and beyond to let the students know that their success is number one.
