Do i need to be involved with student services?

As a new instructor, how much involvement is needed on my part,in working with student services?

Trang,

When you say you create a job what do you mean? Do you create positions or role play?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I create job for student to participate in classes or hands-on experiences also add-in some reward to motivate them.

I am in frequent contact with student services and our dedicated retention team. I get a majority of students that are in their first few phases at our shool. Early identification of those that have issues that may effect their success is very important to retaining those students.

Some are hesitant to ask for help with their particular situation. The fact that someone will take the time to get student services involved often eases their anxiety, and then student services can provide further counseling to help the student with their issues.

I believe as an instructor you need to use all of the tools available for the students to have a positive experiance. Student services, admissions, previous instructors and administrators all have a little different insight on the student's vision of your specific campus.

You got the right idea. I love what you are doing.

I agreed, with my work experience, networking is a great value to the students and also student services. Here at this school all instructors are issued a list of students that we are advisors too. This is to help them with job searching, their acedemics and etc.

Not just instructors but program directors and career services as well. I gain a lot if info from them about what assitance is available so that i can answer some of my students questions rather than just putting them off on another department.

Good for your school. Although, do all you can to create a relationship with students, too. A relationship equals trust.

Student Services is a great tool for instructors. There are some issues with students that we can pick up on, and Student Services is generally well equipped to handle most situations.

Also, encourage students to work with instructors to network as well. The connection and the relationship helps to improve retention.

I totally agree that all instructors should work with student services. Student Services usually have a great networking of information that can be passed on to the students.

I think it is very important to work with student services. They have programs and interactions with the students that are on a different level than the instructor.

It's always good to be as open and available as possible in working with student services. This will allow you to learn more about what the school has to offer and what students are in what programs, etc. Student services at my school offer tutoring for students, career services (job opportunities, etc.) and more. The more you know, the more you can share with your students and increase their probability of returning.
