Admissions Process

The Admissions process is very important because is when the applicant is guided to make the best career choice for their future.

Yes... this is their first impression... and you don't get another chance to make that first impression. The idea is to all tell the same story. This is a good place to start to improve retention.

This is their first impression and a chance for Admissions to make a good one. The Admissions department and the different training course departments should all be on the same page so that the student gets the correct information and doesn’t feel mislead when there is miscommunication amongst departments.

You got it, James. Students need committment... it is hard enough to stay the course in a program that you want to enroll in.

Dr. B

I also agree, however, I think if a student is coming in for a specific program of choice and through the admissions process it is identified that they are not a good candidate for the program (by not meeting the admissions requirements... i.e., testing)then they should not be targeted for another program at that time. I think, they should be told what the other programs are that we offer, send them home and ask them to come back at another time. This will show committment on their part and will justify our industry as not being a "we will accept anyone" post-secondary industry.

Excellent. I love how you are working as a team to retain students.

Dr. B

I agree that retention starts in Admissions. I am unaware of the use of core commonalitiy checklists by our Admissions Dept. However Admissions Reps, whenever psssible, have students talk to the Program Director of the program they are considering. The Program Director asks students important questions that are similar to a checklist.

I agree. It is so important all departments need to be engaged with new students early in the process. Does this make sense?
