Program Director Interviews

I feel that it is imperative that each program director can sit and have a face to face interview with the perspective candidate for their program. I also feel it very crucial to work closely with the admissions department so that there is an open line of coomunication. THis also helps establish the relationship that the admissions reps will reach out and find out the true detials to quesitons that they know nothing about. I have really made sure that I work hand in hand with the admissions team, because truly it is a two-way street that needs to be walked by both deparmtnets to ensure quality education for that perspective student!

charlene,

Certainly meeting the student is helpful.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I agree that Program Directors should be included in the interview process. This will give the student a chance to ask any questions at the beginning in stead of waiting until orientation. It helps that Program Director to know the type of students that are entering into the program also.

Tyler,

The red flags should indicate what the school can do to help the student decide, if the student is interested in the program. If the student has risk factors the school should have programs to deal with those factors, within reason.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

Communication between the program director and admissions during the interview process is crucial, especially when other variables impact the decision of who enrolls into the program. For example, interviewing a student who has evidence of red flags of their abilities to be successful in a program while still meeting minimal enrollment numbers can be conflicting interests when it comes to retention.

I most definetely agree with you here. The Program Director should be included in this process, furthermore it really impresses the student when they get the oppurtunity to meet a PD when completing the admission process

Paula,

Students come with motivation. It is becoming fully engaged that is the challenge. Many come with poor school history and have some expectations of the same. They need some early success to change that.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I am seeing many students that are unmotivated. I feel we need to change the admission process and am very excited to read the different ideas presented in this training.

I agree wholeheartedly with the assessment. As a Program Director, I find that without the coordination during the admissions process, there seems to be attempts to retain and educate some students who are not sure or what they seek. I find that sometimes the pressure to enroll at the outset is done without the desire and concern for the successful completion by the students. It can become a highly frustrating process to teach the student who is unmotivated

Michelle,

Thank you for your post. Yes, developing and maintaining the Education-Admissions relationship is so helpful to retention.
