Orientation at our campus

Orientation at our campus is well planned and has a high attendance of new students. I don't see how anything could be improved, other than maybe having a graduate speak to the students.
Also, a power point of students in the classrooms would provide first hand observation of what to expect once they are enrolled!

Tanya,

You have the right idea. Do all that you can to advise in order to build a trusting relationship.

Dr. Larry Banks

Orientation is a key part of retention. If we fail them during orientation then what message does that send the student. Mentoring lets the student know that if they need additional help they can count on the school faculty to help them.

Our orientation is done during the first two weeks of class. All our students start out in a 6 week long theory class. The first two weeks of which is orientation. I have sat in on the first two days of that and it seems a bit childish.

It helps. Do all you can to connect with students from top to bottom.

Dr. B

I feel as though we have a strong orientation as well, but I agree that having a graduate or a senior level student speak at orientation would be great. Having students speak to students can be very powerful.

we usually have a speakers that reperesent each department and we also have student mentors who conduct the tours and answer questions from a students point of view.
