Mentoring
Mentoring can be an important system to have in place. have never taught about having sudents/graduates mentoring. I think that is an excellent idea.

Alumni are a great resource. Your institution should consider adding alumni/graduates to the orientation agenda.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
We have the graduate students come and talk to the students just starting their clinical rotation. It is a great way for the graduates to share, and for the students to know what to expect. A win-win for all!
I'm job loaded to the gills but I find time every day to get out in to each class and make my way around to every student. Making yourself available and approachable to every student is huge in building those bridges to trouble students who might otherwise fade away.
Robin,
I love that you are thinking about the goal. It is all about student success. That means, students get the knowledge they need in order to get their dream job!
Dr. Larry Banks
I totally agree. Anytime we can build connections through positive relationships helps in retention. If we remember our goal is to help students succeed this all falls into place quite nicely. It is not only good for students but for growth of the business culture current and future.
You got the right idea. Mentoring builds trust.

I think having students mentor is a great idea because new students will connect with them and learn the "system" better.
I think mentoring and retention go hand to hand if the student don't have a a mentor they will feel lost.
True, through the mentoring process you can assure success with the students
I encourage small group mentor/study groups in my college course. It has proven very successful.

Mentoring is not only important to improve retention but also to maintain that bond with former students. We may want to mentor a specific student but at the end the student chooses their Mentor. Good communication and a genuine desire to help are very important elements to become a Mentor. That special bond between students and instructors it’s crucial for retention at it last beyond the students years of school.
Perhaps, mentoring or advising is the most important variable to add... if you want to improve retention.
