Student Leadership Team as Student Mentors

My campus has a student leadership team that mentors new and current students in various aspects of their education during their time on campus. They look out for students who are having difficulty in their courses and tutor them in various subjects. They also are our eyes and ears in the classroom and encourage their fellow classmates to become involved in student activities. It is no wonder that they are looked up to by both staff and students!

Sue ,

How many days into the first class do these team members work with the new students?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

At my school we have Student Leadership Teams in every department. On the first day of class, they show the new students around the campus, answering questions and become their buddy for the first several days of class. Then they help with homework, helping them study and preparing them for upcoming exams.

Hello Sharon,

This sounds like a wonderful program. One problem I see at my school, is isolation between the new students and the students who have been their and learned the ropes. I think a peer mentoring program would be perfect for us. This would be a great opportunity for the new students to feel supported, and for the seasoned students to share their knowledge.

Sharon,

Peers helping peers. This sounds like an excellent program. How long has it been in place? What changes have you seen in retention since the program was put in place?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
