Orientation Optional?

The course literature states:

"As you plan orientation and mentoring programs the most important things to remember are:
Orientation and mentoring are among the many 'optional' services to offer students."

Question one on the quiz is "Orientation programs can be optional for most programs."

I don't really know about most schools and colleges but I have never had to make it mandatory in my experiences in different schools. It is highly encouraged and recommended.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Theresa,

Orientation can take many forms. The best programs are more than a day or half day event. A program that "touches" each new student is best. A well designed program can be mandatory but assuring it is implemented that way can be a challenge. Does that help?

Sumeka,

It can depend on the structure and content of the orientation. In many places orientation is more of an administrative day then a true student orientation.

Each school I have attended all had orientation, so I am not sure if it would have had a different effect on my advancement as it is all I know and i thought it was part of the process (thought it was mandatory). I probably would have been a lost without orientation. I can appreciate it but I can't say it wouldn't be an effective program without it.
