Orientation
Although retention starts in the admissions process. It's in orientation that you build in the foundation for retention strategies.
I agree that this helps start the new student on the right foot. Along that line is existing students can be a huge help during orientation and I feel also that they are in many cases the better mentor when chosen properly.
Stephanie,
I wonder if they shared any information about similarities and differences between the schools.

I have met a few students that fitted in quite quickly. They were kind of familiar with the process because they already have attended another career college before so they were not as anxious as the first time students.
Lorrie,
It does help them get started on the right foot for sure.

Orientation can be thought of as an ice-breaker. The student is a little more comfortable and may feel more at ease after obtaining information about the school and the expectations. This helps them to coordinate and plan their life around school.
Henry,
Orientation should start as early as enrollment and go well into the early terms for the student. It is a process.

My sentiments exactly. In addition retention is has an interdepartmental role. Orientation is also important on the first day of class and may be given to students who miss the first day of class. A mini refresher orientation will be helpful and reinforce the course objectives to the entire class.
