I have always strived to have more advanced students help mentor the new students. The new student will feel more comfortable working with another student and they both benefit from the relationship.

I have been using my student ambassadors for tutoring. It helps out a ton to show leadership within the specific programs.
The benefit of student mentoring student goes beyond just proving retention but also development of bonding among students.

I have found the same thing...especially in a lab setting. When working hands on, I try to find students with a little experience and put one of them in each of the lab groups in the class.
