Yahaira,
Activities help. Do students say this is what brings them in?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
More activities involving food, sports and prizes really encourage the students to come in.
Bonnie,
Thank you for your post. I like that you described an event non-curriculum and an event curriculum related.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Lynn,
Do you involve current students and alumni in the open house?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Bonnie,
Has that impacted retention in anyway? Yes, it does create involvement.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
It is also fun for staff and faculty to supply the snacks. We have done everything from ice cream to bagles. We give all classes a break at the same time and staff serves them. A bit crowded but a great way to interact.
In the past we have had a "beach day" where the school is invited to a cover dinner at a local beach. We either have sand castle contest or scavenger hunts. The students love it.
Our student clinic is a big success with the public and the comment I hear most from students is "I really made that person feel better".
Review class for students before taking their state boards.
An open house is nice...students bring their family, have refreshments and it gives instructors a chance to talk to families about the time commitment the student has undertaken.
I have some student led demos! It does get them involved!
Stephen,
Do you have any feedback as to what students like best?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
We have Quarterly functions as a campus that blends our programs to interact with each other as well as celebrating: "football Jersey day", Bake sales for student council, dunk your PD to start the summer, and a variety of student activities to make the campus a "home" environment for students.
George,
Be sure to develop guidelines and training for the upper level student so they know their role and how to help the new student.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
we are considering a "big brother-big sister" program. in this program, a new student will be linked with an upper level student. this reference person can be a contact throughout school
In school activities like friends and family and day work really well at our campus
Catherine,
I am sure you will have success in bringing your ideas to fruition.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I agree with some of the other comments that we have to help the less-motivated student. However, we also have to give the good students proper feedback on their accomplishments. We do have approachable staff and small class size in our online school. I believe mentoring would help some of our at-risk students succeed so I will be advocating that we include that component. We do plan job fairs, include classes in interview techniques and require students to produce a portfolio, which will help the students show they have the skills to do the jobs for which they are training.
Paula,
That is a great field trip. Reading labels, understanding product placement all help in learning about our nutritional needs and habits.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Ron,
All good stuff. Sounds like good things are happening at your campus.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
One of our Instructors takes the students on a field trip for Nutrition class. Guess where they go??? The grocery store. The students love getting out of class for an hour and they are actually learning something.
We host open houses and encourage the students to come with their families. As well as-
