Sure does. When a student helps to teach others, they learn, too. Good for you.

I have found it helps to mix your students with students that are at the top of the class with students that seem to be having a hard time. It helps to use your students to work together.
Yes, focused learners can slow the process. However, focused learners paired to coach and teach concepts to the more needy actually causes the focused learner to learn more and to learn the content in depth. Just a thought. The idea ... read, talk, and read... causes all students to learn... and if they learn they stick with the course.

By me choosing the groups - I have found some instances where the focused learners are paired up with learners that are much more needy. This may slow the whole group down as the needy students require more attention and explanation to ensure understanding. Animosity can set in between the more capable learners and the needy students. I have tried to have tmore capable learner focus what is being learned and not on the speed in which the labs are being performed, however sometimes that is all they seem to care about - getting the tasks done. Any suggestions?
Yes. Diversity helps the learning environment. Do all you can to carefully mix groups to optimize retention.

Yes... it is good that you recognize the importance of combining to max learning experiences and the learning enviornment.
