Meet the instuctors day

I believe if we meet new students and let them know what got us interested in the field we instruct then, we ask the students what got them involved in the career which their going to school for it'll help break the ice and let the new students know how we started out. It will make them feel more comfortable.

Yes
When talk about anything that relates to performance vehicles.

David,

Have you found some experiences get a bigger reaction than others?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

The first day of the class when I introduce my self to the students I will talk with them about my experience in the field.I like to share some things I did in the shops and see if they will respond with some of their experiences. This is an ice breaker that I like to use to get to know the students and let them get to know me as well.

Roy,

Students and family greatly appreciate meeting instructors before they start their program.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

Bob, from personal experience, this helps so much. We have both an Open House, where prospective students and their parents can meet the staff and the instructors. Also, we encourage meet and greet on the first day so that the students and instructors can become better acquainted with each other.

I always try to inform the students why I choose there field as my career. We would then compare stories on their interest and mine in that way we tend to have students with a lot more interest knowing I can show them how I made it and how they will make it to their choosen career.

George,

Perfect. Instructor background and success stories will help students to see that it is possible to learn what students need to know to get the job. So, take the time to share workplace stories.

We at our school try to have a meet and greet session the first day in class. This does help the students feel more comfortable. Asking questions about their past and their future goals works well. Sharing some brief experiences the instructors have had also lets the students know that everyone faces challenges.

At our school all the instructors go to the class that they will be teaching before they get into your phase. it helps the student to get to know the new instructor that they will be having forthe following course. It makes students comfortable even before they get there.

Tanya,

Excellent... consider adding workplace or war stories on the topic as well. Student's love to connect to the workplace.

Dr. Larry Banks

Great Topic. Instructors are going to be with the students for the next nine to fifteen months, If a student feels thrown into a class with strangers that could also effect retention. When I meet with students on orientation I always give them a little background about the class they are entering, most people are scared the first day,I try to reassure them that they are entering a great group to help ease the nerves. Most of them are happy to hear that.

I would agree totally with you the students need to see where we are today and the achievments we have made. To see a goal and to let them realize that there is a chance for them to make a positive change in their lives. Being able to relate to your students on a personal level and not just looking at them as a paycheck is going to help out in the overall retention of the class. People where I work say it is not a popularity contest but really it is. Retention will be better if you have a good report from the students.

Hi Allison,

Yes, let students know about faculty work experiences and interests. This will help your retention efforts.

Dr. B

I completely agree with you! If students can get to know the professors that teach in their area of interest we have a much greater chance of keeping them engaged throughout their program.
When a student has a professor they can connect with on a professional level, it increases their chances of asking for help when they need it because they know who they can turn to.
