Involvement in school give students a reason for being there and they look forward to coming to school.
Joan,
Not to be contrary but you might want to ask those that do not participate why they don't. At one of my places of employment we had a student BBQ day. In addition to the social activities we held specialized workshops for those students that wanted to keep learning during that time.

Students need to be involved in social activities, it makes them feel a part of the school, even those who don't want to participate enjoy what's going on around them.
richard,
So true. Instructors play the biggest role in retention.

i beleieve the instructors play a very big role in retention. if they make their classes fun, interesting and engaging, the students will want to return to class the following day
Daniel,
Thank you for your post. Research says 80% of students find an instructor knowing their name makes a difference in their retention. Imagine the impact of respect.

I've noticed that the obvious path of "Leading by example" tends to be very effective in promoting student involvment in extracurricular activities. I always announce the event early enough for the students, to make plans to participate, and stress my involvement. If the students respect you, this is very effective.
Alicia ,
Yes, most career school students do not take advantage of the social activities but they do appreciate the availability.

Hello,
Involvement in school tasks, assignments, social activities, clubs etc are great for some students who like to be involved. However, I also believe that this kind of involvement is not for every student. Some students just want to focus on their class work and have a good relationship with their instructor.
sadie,
Yes, students will spend so much of their time with school from the time they enroll until graduation. Involving them and strengthening their connection to the school is a big plus.
