School Events
School events are a great way for students to get to know each other. I try to provide opportunities in the classroom for students to bond with each other, but it would be nice if there were more opportunites outside of the classroom.

Adonis,
Events like these make the school a community.

At our campus we hold frequent "student appreciation events" in which we provide food or games for the students. These events give the students a chance to interect with their fellow classmates and instructors outside of the classroom.
We have a lot of school events that are on-campus and community-related as well. It definitely opens the door for students to bond with each other and develop relationships. We have student appreciation, honors dinner, cultural celebrations, cookouts, meet and greet, etc. It takes a lot of effort to plan and organize these events, but it worth it in the long run.
They then go to that office or individual and have their sheets signed off or get a unique sticker to that office. When they are done they report back. Prizes are then given out
Maryalice,
Congrats on having events ingrained at this level.

Most definitely. School events do engage the students to interact socially, bond with and use each other for support.
School events is a great tool to use as student bonding. At our school we have several events during the year for student excitement such as Student appreciation day, Multicultural Day, Particular Program week where each day we are during something different with the students. The excitement of the student are at an all time high. We also have community service available through student services.
cynthia,
Take a look in this forum. There are many great ideas for school events to pick from and integrate into your school.

Michael,
The community involvement approach is wonderful. Not only good for the students but also good for the reputation of the school.

I think more social activities is a great way to involve students and get them more centered around their education. My class actually plans activities together outside of school.
The approach we use here is to have community events that our students have multiple ways to volunteer. Just recently, we hosted a holiday party for a group of local foster homes at a community center. We had opportunities for students to come to the event, or if they could not make it, they were able to donate small toys or food to the families. Some of the classes got together and did a group project for the event, even though they could not make it. This way, everyone felt like they participated and not left out. I think communication about the events the school is participating in is also very crucial for success. Letting students know how they can help or contribute and giving them advance notice is important for these opportunities to exist.
I agree that the more you get students involved in ativities the more they feel involved in school. They do feel more comfortable in their surroundings.
Aleesa,
If you have success stories,to share from your efforts that could help star a more school wide effort.
