I have been involved where the Career Services or Placement department holds workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills, interview strategies, etc. on a regular basis to mentally prepare the student for successful outcomes (graduation and employment). This process starts in first term where the instructors bring their students to the Career Services Department to be introduced to the department that will help them succeed.
Throughout training, our placement program periodically meets with students to enhance interviewing skills and resume writing among other things.
Sharon,
Congratulations on helping students succeed. When they do everyone wins.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Same here. This part of the process is taken care of fairly early and I think it is fine as well.
We have seen a measurable improvement in placement numbers, and also in student foot traffic to the Career Services office. Having the Career Services team involved throughout the program means they team have a clearer idea of the students career objectives, and are able to better assist them prior to graduation.
Sharon,
Career Services sounds like things are well. Is this reflected in placement numbers?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Our Career Services Department introduce themselves at Orientation, and make class room visits throughout the term to freshman and senior classes. They organize regular on campus job employment meetings for single employers seeking to hire grads and current students. Twice yearly they organize a major job fair on campus, with multiple employers participating. The team make themselves available to students seeking assistance with interviewing, resume writing and career advice. They also participate in end of term presentations to provide feedback on presentation skills. We could improve our internship to broaden our network of intern providers.
Isabella,
Depending on your school's accreditation there should be a program advisory committee that helps to keep the school current.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
The placement department offers assistance with job placement, resume building, role playing and mentoring. I believe they could continue to survey employers and prospective students on trends in the job sector to ensure they are kept current on what employers are looking for from newly graduated students.
Karen,
This is a good suggestion. Bring it to the people that can make it happen.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Our Career Services department meets one on one at the midpoint of each students program. I feel they should come into classes as guest speakers each term and talk to the student about the industry and how jobs are trending. I also think they should post job orders and placement weekly so admissions can point out what fields employers are looking for.
Jimmy,
A person can focus on number based goals but should believe in the mission of the school.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Juwana,
It is a good start. Mock interviews would be a great addition.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I think hiring student focused staff, and not numbers focused that can sometimes lose sight of our goal.
They come andgive them input on resumes and interview tips. I think that they are doing what they can
Chanel ,
What sort of interactions do you have with this department? Do they visit your class?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Dawn,
Yes, frequent interaction with students cab help them greatly in preparing for another school or a career
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
This is very similiar the activities that are done thruough our placement department. It is important to reach out to the students on many levels. All working in the same direction of placement in their field of study.
We have graduate employment department that discusses options with each student who is graduating. Any time a student is placed with an employer, graduate employment is informed so that it can be used for networking/building relationships with the community to help our current students.
Our placement department helps our students prepare themselves professionally so that they become a marketable choice for the employers. They teach them strategies to interview well and to write a concise yet informative resume. They post when one of our own successfully is hired to motivate our students.
