career services
I agree with this statment also if the school provides for employment services this has to be a plus and I believe the schools that do this has a better relationship with the student
One comment that I hear often is how grateful out students are to the career services department.
One of the things I see missing is in the students themselves. They have little or no experience in building resumes; how to build a resume that will distinguish them from the 60plus other students entering the marketplace following every graduation. Their resume format is virtually identical from student to student, and that is of course the way it has to be, given the shear volume of students handled by student services. We work with the students to help them flush out their information and give their resume a more professional appearance. Additionally, I think many of our students would benefit from being taught/roll playing on how to interview and how to interact with dealer personnel when pursuing an interview.
Our career service department builds a relationship with students from day one at our campus. I believe that helps them understand that we are committed to them and their future goals.
Our campus does a great job with student placement and career development. What i would like to see is a relationship with the business community. The campus could asked and have a different spearker , for the student, each week. This could motivate student and improve retention.
The key is to get career in front of students early in the process. Have career services tell war stories... how successful they are at help students to find job in the career. Advise students on career themes and things will go better.

Sometimes you have to drag the students to career services to inform them of all the wonderful things they have to offer. Our students really need coaching on interview techniques as well as resume preparation.
Agree it will show that their investment is worth it.
Carring and support is available as soon as they are starting.
Motivate them , showing them at anytime jobs availability and answer to important quetions.
In our school we let the students know from day 1 or orientation about the career services department and what they do and they are also introduced to them so they know who they are and where there office is so the students can go there and get information about the job market, very important office and helps the students as well.
Our employment department begins working with the students from the time they enroll until graduation. They are very effective at keeping up with the students all through their enrollment.
Remember, they came to school to learn what they need to know to get "the" job. Career services is an intergal part of the whole process. If all departments link to the career, retention will improve.

I agree, we have to convince students of their future prospects if they are going to remain motivated to complete the program they started. I love seeing them get excited with job prospects. Not a day goes by on campus that a student does not come by my classroom to have me look over their resume before they head off for an interview.
Skills are important. Talk to students about how there skills are transferable to other professions.

Most of our students usually have a job going through school, but not in their related field of study. This can work for them, but it can also work against them because it reduces the time they can physically spend on studying. I think if it's in a related field of study, then at least they are still training on the skills thay they're learning while in the class which tends to reinforce waht they've just learned. We also offer Skills classes which also add to this area if they don't have a job.
Yes it is very crucial. We definitley need Career Services to make their impact on our students if they don't know that they have those options and resources then they probably wouldn't want to choose the school that didn't have it.
Remember, all staff need to focus comments and advice on career centered themes. This is the reason students come to school.

I agree. Our career services department is a tremendous asset to our school. They present on a variety of topics in the classroom and hold wonderful workshop. Having such an active career services department helps student to see the end goal and provides them with extra motivation.
I think this is a huge asset to our school. Our externship manager advertises externships available and such. It just seems something is missing. Not knowing everything he does, I could be on a different page.
For sure. Students study to get the job. If they can see that the education links to employement, they do stick.

I think employment services is a crucial part of retention. Not only are we trying to help them find jobs once they graduate, but if they cant work while they're in school, they will have a much harder time sticking it out til the end.
