CareerServices Affect Retention
Career services help students to see that their here to help them find a job in their feild. Students will feel secure that someone is behind them till they gradurate.
Marlene,
How do you see this team working?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
David,
Indeed, Career Services working with students as early on as possible does aid retention as well as help set student expectations.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Our Career Services department is wonderful at placement. They meet with the students and encourage them to work hard at being the ideal employee. However, our CS office does not work with the student during the admissions process. I believe that would be a great idea if they did work as a team more during the enrollment process. That would certainly increase our retention.
Almost like reverse engineering, Placement services should begin with the admissions process, and integrated into the courses, more than just a Career Development and Career Management classes at the beginning and end of the students' education here at out school. It can help even drive curriculum.
David,
Yes, seeing that the skills they are learning will indeed lead to a career is helpful.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
At least 4 times a year we have career fairs for our students. We will have as much as 30 employers at the fair talking to our students. Usually these events are for students close to there graduation date, but some of these events are for all students. The idea is to let them see the all of the demand for the skills they are learning. I do believe this helps retention.
Stephen,
How do you help out in the community?
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
We have a close relationship on the campus and out in the community with our C-S rep. WE meet regularly to discuss open positions and qualified candidates.
Exactly. We have job postings around our school that are updated on a regular basis, and we encourage our students to see what jobs are out there from early on into the program. we also encourage them to talk to career services as much as possible so that they can be aware of any opportunities that may seemingly pop up out of nowhere.
Anthony,
Yes they do. In fact Career Services should be part of the admissions process as well. Start the students with the eyes on the prize.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I agree with the thread of the conversation. Career Services aids in the orientation process,as well as job finding process.
shaelyn,
An early appearance by career services helps students to focus on the end prize.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
Our career services starts in first term, talking with students about the importance of being professional
Donnalyn,
At what point in the curriculum is the course offered? How often does Career Services visit classrooms? Hopefully they are visiting early and often.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
We have a wonderful careers class that teaches resume making, interview process and has career job posting boards
Alicia ,
Having Career Services involved throughout the program helps the student focus on the end goal and prepare for their chosen career.
