Employment skill

Effective placement and employment skills training positively impacts retention. Employment skills activities are ways for students to carify goals and values and make self discoveries that impact on their retention.

Stephanie,

This presents an opportunity for curriculum revision. Look for opportunities to repeat the skills learned throughout the program.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

Students should be able to practice their skills over and over, "at least for 30 days or 45 consecutive times", repetitiously, to be able to learn and know the skill well. In my curriculum, it does not allow that much practice. Even after the student has been check off on the skill, most time they either do not remember some of the skill or none of the skill. Sometimes it is obvious that the skill was remembered just for check-off or test (short term goals)rather than learned for long term goals such as passing state board exam and getting employment after graduation. Yes, we offer tutoring.

Lisa,

Yes it does form a bridge. After all, starting a career is what they come to our schools for, is it not?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

Students need to develop effective employment skills if they wish to be successful in the work place. This training should be introduced and developed while in school. Once they are comfortable with the process and feel certain they can use these skills, retention may be enhanced. It also serves as cognitive a bridge from school to employment.
