Increase Student Retention
What do you think are important step to effectively increase student retention?
Michael,
Professionalism often means more than having the exact skill set for the technical components of the job.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
I like using "Mock" Interviews as well to prepare students for their real interview. I think one area that really needs to be stressed to students is professionalism. We have employers come to campus to speak to students about professionalism and what to expect in the field. This is one area that can really help students and retention in the externship area.
Alexandra,
No it is not. Students are more willing to answer that question than most might think.
Ron Hansen, Ed. D.
i feel the important step to student retention is not letting small signs, like a student being absent go unnoticed. Asking a student if everything is ok when they seem upset is not out of line as an instructor.
The students should be informed of the program requirements and expectations. Then review jobs and job expectations. We do a "mock" interview with each student prior to them actually going to a potential job interview.
Not only knowing the names...starting from admissions, the connection begins for the students
YULIET,
THE most important step is for the instructor and student make a connection. Instructors knowing the student by name is one of the best ways to build that connection.
