Understanding "HABE's"

This module makes sense to me as far as , seeing and or creating a vision, being aware of and seeing blind spots, and providing great customer service. The hardest part of being an instructor is HABE's, Habits, Attitude, Beliefs, and Expectations. These are deeply rooted and weave there way through out the whole fabric of an individule. Very often I run into this situation of students being very negative in their approach to their education. This is very hard to turn around and most instructors will usually turn their backs on that student. I see it a a chance, a project, a goal.My goal is to turn that person around and for the first time see what an education can do for them. I have a very diverse back ground and us that to my advantage, I speak to them as individuals, on their level so to speak, and show them how a person like me who came from this certain back ground with certain, attitudes, beliefs, expectations, and habits. came to be the person I am today. I'm an Instructor, a person who never thought would recieve so much for helping so many, and I have achieved my goals I thought never attainable. By sharing with them an insite to myself such as they have never seen in me before, it shows them that if you think it and believe in it all things are possible. This should be what instructors strive for, a commitment to their students, to themselfs, to their fellow employees, and to their profession.

I have always know of HABE's
Just never had a name for it.
The foundation work of a child is made in the first five years.
It takes work to overcome some students disposition.

I feel that we definately need to re-asses our function as a preliminary order of business in a world crowded with buzz words.

Don't take it personally is very important. New beginnings or opportunities are very important for instructors and students.

If I have a situation where a student and i have an argument I let them know the next day that yesterday was yesterday and today is another day.

Gary,

This is very good advice on how to handle this type of situation. You mentioned that the student may have a bad attitude, this might be simply because they have a completely different opinion than you. And understanding that opinion can decrease a lot of stress.

Gary,

Sometimes just asking them about what's going on and showing that you care is all they need.

Sometimes it is very difficult not to take it personal when we are verbally attacked by a student with a bad attitude. If we realize that this behavior comes from their past upbringing and experiences, then we can be more objective when we take the time to get to know the student and ask about what is going on in their life so they know that we genuinely care about them. I have found that this almost always results in a 180 degree turnaround in their attitude.

Some of these students made need professional help. Does your school have a list of mental heath professionals that these students can be referred to?

Nadine,

HABEs can be the most frustrating for instructors at times, because we do not see an instant change in behaviors or tendencies of our students. However, HABEs have been developed over many years and it will take work each and every day to help our students develop new HABEs.

I agree. I teach young adults and the HABE I find the most challenging to change are with the students who have suicidal tendencies. One day you happily feel you reached out, for the following day finding them back to a very low state of mind.

I think that even the worst learned behaviors can be overcome by the right attitude. We all see it every day. They come pissed off at the world and we break them down and make them realize that they have controle.

Mark,

This is a great response!!!

You are definitely an "intelligent Heart."

Keep up the good work.
