students always come first, taking time to listen, understand, and comunicate with them is important to there education.
David,
Mentoring is a conscious effort, however modeling is not. It is a subconscious action. If our modeling does not match our mentoring, then students will know we are just blowing smoke.
I agree. In the lab, if a student makes a mistake, I turn it around and help them see how to make the mistake right and learn from it. Afterall, we are educators.
Absolutely! Many times students come from a less than an ideal backround and what they really want as part of their education is someone to listen and show interest in them.
Listening and mentoring takes a conscious effort. This is part of what we are getting compensated for as instructors.
I agree if you just treat the students as a number they will pick up on this and total shut them selfs out to anything you say.
Donald,
Telling and showing students they can do it is very important. I believe that showing them is the most important. Several times students think that we are just telling them something to be nice, but when we show them they can see their abilities.
I agree always tell them they can do it and help show them they can do it
Michael,
This is very simple to do, just ask how they are doing, or asking about their kids can show students that we are paying attention and care.
Wow, positive reinforcement helps students succeed? Who'da thunk it?
It is important to communicate with the student and let them know that you care about his or her education.
I truely agree they are the reason we are all doing what we do. Taking the time for them shows commitment from our side.
George,
That is a very true statement. We are in the education business and without students we have not business.
I agree, Students should absolutely come first, with out them there would be no school.
Rob,
Sometimes we are the only source of positive communication and they only person to take time to listen to the student.
