If we take the time to listen to are students we can get to the root cause of there problems

agree. most of our students i believe look to us not only as educators but also someone that can maybe relate to what they are going through; whether it is school related or personnal

Thanks, Benson.

One of the best things we can do for our students is to help them develop effective listening skills.

Being a good listener is important in being a good teacher. What is a good listener? I think to be a good listener you need not only to hear the words, but understand what is being said. Sometimes interpretation is a dificult thing to do when crossing the generations. I try to always try to take into account what he perspective and environment of the student is.

Jay,

Beeing a good listener is one of the most important characteristics of a good teacher. Thanks for pointing this out.

Mark,

Many times our role is to listen and to ask questions that lead students to solutions. Most of the time students really do know what needs to be done to address a challenge. Our role is to help them verbalize the solution and develop action steps.

I agree. I've had experiences with students who had problems that where very simple to fix, but to the student it was a major thing. Simple conversation can go a long was. You never know what doors you're going to open up. Once those doors open alot of times you can find the true problem and help the student work towards the goal of fixing it.
