Treating my students as I treat my own kids.
I treat my students in the same way I treat my own kids. I do not do anything differant, I think before I speak and treat each situation as it comes about.
Communication is essential in my field of online teaching. I do not see my students face to face, emailing them is the key to communicating to them. I also get their student advisor involved in order to press upon the student the importance of maintaining the course and staying on track. Coaxing the student, encouraging them to keep up with the course and working with them through their attitude and beliefs about not being able to complete the course due to personal circumstances. This essentially makes me their cheerleader/coach and that is what I am to my kids.
Karen,
What are some of your "mom" duties at school?
I am know as "work and school mom", so I can see what you mean. Mutual respect is critical.
Thanks, Terry.
It is important to model, mentor amd monitor as we engage with students. What are some ways you try to monitor student behavior to determine if they are internalizing the attitudes and displaying the behaviors of a professional in their field?
Wow...My students are adults, (age 18 and over) and I struggle to treat them as adults, in a professional learning atmosphere. Here, the classroom is about promoting professionilism. I treat the students with respect, and encourage like behavior from them.
Interesting post, John.
What are some of the specific things you do to treat your students like your kids?
