Where will you be...
On the first day of class I have students answer a series of questions including:
Why are you here?
What do you want to get out of school?
Where do you see yourself a year from now?
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I like them to create of a vision and stay focused on those goals.

I borrowed this same kind of idea from a friend of mine who was teaching a 1st year writing class. He would have students actually write a letter to themselves about their expectations in the class in particular (narrowing the focus within a 10 week period) and also beyond that (1 year or 5 years). He would save them and have the students read them aloud on the final day of class. It was interesting to see how this idea of vision/beliefs played out based upon each students individual identity.
In clinical group I ask these same questions for discussion to help the students verbalize what exactly they are working so hard towards.
