First Impressions

Students react to a freindly attitude even before they reach my class. Just saying Hi and showing interest in them in the hallway creates a foundation forthe future. Sometimes I honestly don't remember our encounter when I do get them in my class, but they do. This means when my oppertunity to teach them comes, we already have a relationship. Hopfully, it is a positive one.

Natalie,

Thank you for this post. You are definitely on the right path here. We need to make our students feel comfortable and safe so that they are willing to listen and learn. Sometimes a smile and a quick, sincere "hello" are the most important things a teacher does or says during a lesson.

I find that students who come in and are not necessarily having a good day, never expect someone to smile to them. However, enduring in patience, and alternating your approach, soothes their irritability, and seems to be a perfect way to establish a healthy relationship.

Being friendly in the hallways and with students it make you aproachable.

You are an "Intelligent Heart" and that is why students are drawn to you. Your smile is a magnet for them.

I try to keep a smile on my face, and a tinkle in my eye so they are never quite sure what to expect from me. I enjoy having fun in my classes and for the most part that makes learning easier. Alot of my students come back to see me long after they have left my class just to keep me updated on what's going on with their lives and classes.

Fun and laughing are very important in relating to students and each other as staff members. It helps form a postive environment.

Being friendly in the hallways and parking lot is good. But if I need to visit another instructors class I try to be friendly and look like I am having fun (I usually am). Often that class will ask what I teach because I appear to be having fun and they want a piece of that also.

by being friendly in the hallways and with students it make you aproachable and the students will develope a comfort zone with you making it easier for them to learn and to also ask you questions

Great way to establish a relationship!

Sometimes it's just the little things students remember the most. They can feel that you care.
