Show and Tell

Show the student the end result of hard work and dedication. Tell the student a story or give a personal example of how you over came an obstacle.

Thank you, Vinny.

Being a similar other helps one to relate to the students. It is important for us to help students build their confidence by noting and recognizing small successes they have that, if built upon, will lead to academic success.

I have first hand knowledge of what they are experiencing. Ten years after going through what they themselves are going through, they see the end result,me now in front of them as there current instructor. I tell them of my struggles and i have been able to persevere and come out ahead.

Stacey,

Thank you for this post. One of the things that makes adult students different from traditional students is the fact that adult students bring more life experience to the classroom. Getting them to share their experiences in a way related to the course objectives is a good way to build rapport and a sense of community.

Yes, personal stories help along with letting the students tell some of their own experiences. Everyone gets involved and hopefully will learn from one another.

Rasheedah,

Thank you for this post. Showing students that we do know where they are because we were once there is a good thing to do. They also need to know that minor failures are a part of the learning process and can be overcome.

I always tell personal stories to help the students relate to a situation and it also lets them know that we (instructors) ARE REAL and make mistakes but can overcome from the lesson learned.

I try to do this in class ,stories makes all the difference in our school. they learn best this ways.

I really like that idea! I am going to use that myself!

I like it! Works real well when it relates to the leason being learned. If they are having trouble overcoming an obsticle, share a story and show them the way you approched and solved the problem.
