Thanks for sharing this perspective. You are correct. The things that work in a classroom also work online.

The biggest difference is that we need to choose our words a bit more carefully when we communicate in writing as "tone" can sometimes be misinterpreted when we write.

Much the same characteristics that you apply in the classroom will apply on line. Engage the student in discussion, sharing, humor and questions. I find that assigning students to investigate the answer to an assignment with local answers is engaging. This provides them an opportunity to compare notes with other locations and provides a richer learning experience for everyone concerned.
