Are you making a positive impact?
Making a good first impression is very important. If you greet your students with a positive attitude and a welcome they will feel more at ease as they enter your class for the first time. Next you need to be prepared for the start of the day ahead of you.
If the class is prepared and material is out to be distributed as necessary that will reinforce their mind set that you are ready to start the learning experience and they will know that is how they should prepare themselves for the days ahead.
Filecha,
Thanks. It is important to remember that we get a chance to make a new first impression in each class meeting. Those first few minutes can set the stage for a great day.
Preparation is so very important and people always remember their first impression of a person and of a school in general. Was it clean, where the people friendly. What you soo first many times sticks.
I beleive that if we put out best foot forward in the beginning we set a presidence for what that student will expect the remaining time in school
What we do in teh beginning really counts.
To make that first impression can be very tough. By starting your day with some simple Q&A the students tend to feel that you are much more approachable.
That is very true. You only have one chance at a first impression. The communication (in an online setting) should be approachable, comprehensive and welcoming.
Well i hadden't thought of it quite that way, but you're correct. As i start my classes well organized and on time they are ready for that every day.
James,
Try to look at the "first impression" as a daily thing. We need to make a great first impression as we start each class meeting. What aree some ways to do that?
Well i guess there is truth in the saying " you only have one chance to make a good first impression".
Your first impression will leave a lasting memory with your students, and the better organized and positive you are in the beginning
the quicker you will have them working with you.
Excellent points, Marvin.
I was taught long ago that the more emotional and confrontational a student becomes, the more calm and quiet the teacher must become. Students feed off the emotion of their teachers. When we have "an attitude," the student's will get worse.
Yes and I realize now that each day we make a first impression. WE can also get up on the wrong side of the bed. WE need to be aware of how we are reacting to our students. I have had occasions where, the student I didnt get along with at all came in with a much better attitude and even appoligized for his behavior yesterday. As I stood back and thought about it I realized my attitude was effected by his actions.
