positively positive
intentionally make a part of my effort to asses the state of the individual and/or the total classroom. When either or all are in a poor state of mind their potential for learning is drastically decreased and thei impacts not only the individual but offer an opportunity for others in a more positive state to be dragged down. Sometime the notice that you notice and are making an effort to assist is enought to raise momentum on the emotional level and other times the state may involve some more direct intervention. it is a win-win situation for the student(s),classroom, and school environment.
I agree. We were actually covering in class last night how emotions are catching. One negative person can affect the entire atmosphere of the classroom. Laughter is often the best medicine and can lighten the mood in the room.
I also believe it is important to be authentic. When you students see you as a real person and not just an authority figure, they become more open.
Sherry,
What are some specific things you do be a positive role model?
Jeffrey Schillinger
great idea dave it is so important to get the idea of how the class is feeling.
I am not a negative person, I totally try and keep everybody light-hearted and be a positive role-model
good point about the negativity spreading and keeping it mood in control. I typically reinforce positive moments, create light laughter, and refocus everyone on the projects.
I also try to scan over the looks on students' faces, especially after announcing a test, quiz, research project, etc. If a few students look upset/negative about it, I try to thwart that negativity as quickly as possibly to keep it from spreading to other students.
