listen

I have learned if you truly listen to the student it helps them trust you and respect you.

Enid,

Other than listening, what are ways teachers can show they care?

Jeffrey Schillinger

Talking about a similar situation and helping them open up and then asking them questions, showing them you care.

I agree. So much can be learned from simply listening.

Brooke,

I found that asking these students to comment on other students' statements requires them to listen more and talk less.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I agree. Listening shows true care toward the student. The only issue is you will have some students who all they want to do is talk and never listen.

Priscilla,

Thanks! This is a good example of what it takes to effectively serve students.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I agree I recently listened to a student tell me how he wants to start his own business after graduation so I contacted an instructor on campus that has experience in field and he was able to speak to the student and give him so very good advice. The Student came back to me to thank me for helping him.

Mayda,

How do you develop good listening skills?

Jeffrey Schillinger

Listening is very important in all aspects of life. You get to know who the other person is feeling and the other person also feels that you care about them.

I agree, it also give them a sense of belonging to the class. From my experience, it also gives them a bosst in confidence knowing that someone is willing and able to listen.
