Expectations and Goals
I believe that expectations set by the administration and faculty are just as important as the goals of the students.
Kathy,
The Pygmailion effect is a documented principle. Students who know we thingk they can do it usually succeed. The oposite is true as well. If a teacher has no confidence in a student, the teacher will unconsiously signal that feeling to the student, who will likely live up the teacher's negative expectations.

I agree - I think the expectations of admin and faculty help students develop their individual goals.
Megan,
Thanks for this post. Students typically need quite a bit of support in order to be successful.

I agree, the rules and expectations of the school as a whole are very important in student goals as well. Students need to be supported in learning what is expected of them, and how that fits into their goals. I also believe that from time to time, students who are not meeting the school's expectations need some additional support. It's not an all or nothing situation.
